ことが出来る（ことができる） can; able to

■ Verb (dictionary form) + ことができる

食(た)べる (to eat) → 食(た)べることができる (can eat; able to eat)

例文(れいぶん) EXAMPLE SENTENCE

星(ほし)は夜(よる)に見(み)ることができる。

Stars can be seen at night.

友(とも)だちは日本語(にほんご)を上手(じょうず)に話(はな)すことができる。

My friend can speak Japanese well.

COMMENTS

■ This is another way to express the potential (can do) form. 食(た)べられる = 食(た)べることができる

■ The polite form is (dictionary form verb) + ことができます

■ The negative (cannot do) is (dictionary form verb) + ことができない or ことができません

■ The kanji is 出来(でき)る which is literally, "go out and come."
